Seminar on Destructive Behavior at the ISEC NAS RA
March 28, 2025
Destructive behavior, as one of the types of deviant behavior, falls within the field of modern psychological research and clinical issues. It is no coincidence that the next scientific-practical seminar organized by the Department of Psychology at the ISEC NAS RA was dedicated to this very problem.
On 27th March 2025, a seminar on the topic "Destructive Behavior: Causal-Consequential Relationships and Ways of Overcoming" was held at the ISEC. The speaker was a leading specialist in this field, Ph.D. of Psychological Sciences, Professor Kamo Vardanyan.
The seminar was opened by the head of the Department of Psychology, Doctor of Psychological Sciences, Professor Naira Hakobyan, who, after welcoming the participants, presented several aspects of Professor Vardanyan’s professional activities, and then passed the floor to him.
As the speaker noted, the term "destructive behavior" in professional literature has not only received various interpretations but also various definitions. After a brief review of the definitions by different authors, the professor presented his own definition: "Destructive behavior is behavior aimed at disrupting the relative stability of internal and external environments (homeostasis), order, balanced systems, and a state of relative calm – up to the emergence of chaos or their destruction".
Based on this definition, the entire seminar was structured. Symptoms of destructive behavior were discussed, as well as its two types – auto-destructive and hetero-destructive. The various types of auto-aggressive behavior were thoroughly examined, and an overview of the neurophysiological, biochemical, psychiatric, and psychological mechanisms of destructive behavior was provided.
The seminar participants, representing various professional fields and institutions, expressed great satisfaction with the lecture delivered by the experienced specialist.
The Q&A session was very active, with an endless flow of questions, which testified to the high level of audience engagement and the demand for organizing similar seminars. The audience was particularly drawn to the fact that Professor Vardanyan supported his statements about destructive behavior with examples from his extensive psychological and pedagogical practice.
