The Victorious Path, the Feelings of a Winner and the Vision of a Post-victorious Future

December 27, 2024

Vruyr Grigoryan, a 2nd-year student of the Master's program at the International Scientific-Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia "Aerospace Engineering", became the winner of the 2024 Pan-Armenian Competition of Innovative Projects and Scientific and Technical Developments of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia "100 Ideas for Armenia" in the nomination "Military Security Systems". Vruyr presented the project "Machine learning for classification of radar targets", which follows from the problems of his master's thesis.

The NAS RA International Scientific-Educational Center not only participates in the formation of professional growth and success of its students, but is also consistent in covering and evaluating each success achieved by them. The Center's interview series "History of Success" opens its next page to record the story of Vruir's victory.

Vruyr, what does this victory mean to you?

– This victory is not only a personal achievement for me, but also a great responsibility. It symbolizes that in our homeland it is possible to implement scientific and innovative ideas into reality for the benefit of our country’s development. The victory once again shows that such a small country as Armenia has a huge potential for competitiveness in the scientific world. It also inspires me to continue working on innovative solutions, combining science, education and patriotism to serve the progress of our country.

Who led you to this achievement?

– My victory became possible due to the people who guided me on this path with their knowledge, support and faith. First of all, the professorial, scientific and research staff of the ISEC NAS RA, who showed me the portrait of a successful engineer: infinitely curious, hardworking and patriotic. The modern environment of the “Engineering City” also played an indispensable role, as the resources and professionals there gave me the tools and knowledge to implement my ideas.

– What is the title of your Master’s thesis, how did you choose it and which part of it does your winning project make up?

– The title of my Master’s thesis is “Machine Learning Methods for Radar Target Classification”. I chose this topic because it combines my two main interests: artificial intelligence and radar technologies, which are of strategic importance to our country. My project is an important part of my thesis, as it shows how machine learning algorithms can be applied to solve defense problems, such as high-precision target detection and classification. This project has become a practical part of my thesis, where I present how to develop the capabilities of radar systems by applying innovative approaches. My project is not only of scientific value, contributing to the development of our science and education, but also has practical potential. Its implementation contributes to the improvement of our state security systems, while supporting technological progress and strengthening the engineering mind of Armenia at the world level.

– What practical value can your project have in life? Is it intended only for Armenia, or would you like it to be applied on broad international platforms?

– My project has broad practical significance both at the national and international levels. In Armenia, it can become an important tool for improving national defense and security systems. This will allow us to prevent possible threats more effectively, increasing the reliability of surveillance technologies. But my goals are not limited to Armenia. My project was developed in such a way that it could find its place in the international market. Today, such technologies are in great demand in the security sector, especially in countries where technological development is focused on strategic problems. All this gives Armenia the opportunity to act as a high-tech manufacturer, showing that our country can not only use innovations, but also offer advanced solutions.

– What prospects does the Master's program of ISEC NAS RA “Aerospace Engineering” open up for you, students?

– The Master's program of the ISEC NAS RA "Aerospace Engineering " opens up great prospects for young people in both scientific and practical fields. This educational program provides a unique opportunity for students to participate in areas of strategic importance for both Armenia and international technology markets. It offers not only in-depth knowledge in the field of aerospace technology and instrumentation, but also provides practical skills development. Students participate in real-world projects, use modern equipment and work together with specialists with international experience. Most importantly, this educational program is shaping a generation with national identity and technological advanced thinking. My Master's degree gave me the opportunity to develop my ideas and apply them in both national and international projects. I am sure that alumnis of this program will be in leading positions in the future, contributing to the scientific and technological rise of the Motherland.

– How do you see yourself in the future: in what country, in what job market and in which role?

– In the future, I see myself in Armenia as an active participant in the development of the scientific, technical and defense industries of our country. My goal is to work in an environment where I can apply my knowledge and skills, contributing to the national security and technological progress of Armenia. In addition, I want to cooperate with international scientific and engineering centers in order to exchange experiences and implement joint projects. It is important for me to become a bridge between Armenian scientific thought and the world's leading technologies. I see myself not only as a researcher and engineer, but also as an inspiring leader of the younger generation. I want to contribute to the creation of an environment where our youth will believe that they can achieve great success by staying in Armenia and serving their homeland. Armenia's scientific potential has no boundaries, and my goal is to fully reveal it and present it to the world.

What principles guide you on the path of your professional development?

– I am guided by a number of important principles that always accompany me on the path of professional development. They are:

1) Patriotism: My goal is to serve my homeland through science and technology. I believe that every Armenian scientist is obliged to contribute their knowledge and skills to the development of Armenia.

2) Innovation and creativity: I try to be innovative, not only by following technological developments, but also by offering my own solutions.

3) Hard work and consistency: Success never comes without effort. I am constantly focused on my goals and strive to consistently develop my knowledge and skills.

4) Collaboration: I am convinced that teamwork is necessary to achieve great goals. I attach great importance to cooperation with both colleagues and international experts.

5) Learning and continuous development: Science does not stand still, and on the path to professional development, I always strive to learn new things, deepen my knowledge and develop both professionally and as an individual.

These principles help me not only to overcome difficulties, but also to shape my contribution to the scientific and technological progress of my motherland.
