10-day event to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity at the ISEC NAS RA. Upcoming Open Day Series

May 23, 2025

May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity, proclaimed by the United Nations, designed to highlight the key role of biodiversity in maintaining life on Earth and sustainable development. Every year, the UN publishes its message dedicated to the message of the day (see the 2025 message on the official UN website). Starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, the ISEC NAS RA has launched a unique Master's program in the Republic of Armenia, "Study and Conservation of Biodiversity", based on the importance of the correct solution of biodiversity problems. The program is organized on the basis of the Chair of Plant Diversity and Ecosystems Studies of the ISEC NAS RA, located at the Takhtadjian Institute of Botany.

Biodiversity issues are in the focus of the department throughout the year, and within the framework of the International Day for Biodiversity, they became a special 10-day topic. The 10-day event dedicated to the International Day for Biodiversity started on May 21, 2025 and will end on May 31. Within its framework, there are already implemented and more planned events. In particular, on May 21, the teachers of the department and some of the master's students took part in an international conference organized at the Ibis Hotel in Yerevan entitled "Ecosystem Inventory in Armenia", where the first-year master's student of the department Armine Arshakyan made a report on the topic "The Importance of Biodiversity for the Culture of Armenia" (supervisor: Ph.D., Associate Professor Alla Aleksanyan). On May 22, Alla Aleksanyan, Head of the Department of Plant Diversity and Ecosystems Studies at the Institute of Plant Ecology and Ecology of the International Scientific and Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, held an open lesson at Yerevan School No. 64 by invitation. She touched upon the importance of biodiversity, spoke about threats to biodiversity and possible ways to preserve it, and held a quiz at the end of the meeting.

On May 30 at 11 am, an interactive open discussion on the topic of "Making Management Decisions in the Sphere of Specially Protected Natural Areas" is planned, to which the department invites all interested parties, especially applicants (address: Yerevan, Acharyan Street, 1, A. Takhtadjian Institute of Botany at the NAS RA). At the end of the event, it is planned to answer all the applicants' questions, thereby starting a series of open days planned for the admission period. On May 31, the results of the 10-day program will be summed up, and the series of open days for applicants will continue.
