ISEC Students Participate in Ecosystem Studies

During May, second-year students from the Department of Plant Biodiversity and Ecosystem Studies at ISEC, under the guidance of lecturer Mari Chakryan, conducted a research study evaluating ecosystem provisioning services in the lake areas of the central Lori Plateau.

The study was carried out utilizing the methodology and questionnaires jointly developed by the ISEC Department of Plant Biodiversity and Ecosystem Studies and the YSU Department of General Geography.

This assessment will help determine the social significance of the three lake areas near the Saratovka settlement for the local community, as well as identify potential social conflicts that might arise during the implementation of the nature-based lake restoration project.

The research incorporates essential practical components for the ISEC Master's program in "Biodiversity Study and Conservation," reinforcing the theoretical knowledge acquired through the "Ecosystem Services" and "Nature-Based Solutions and SDGs" courses.

The research topic was selected within the framework of the UNEP/UNESCO/BMUKN international alumni seminar "Nature-Based Solutions: Strengthening the Water-Food-Biodiversity Nexus," organized by the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) at the Technical University of Dresden. This initiative enabled CIPSEM alumna Mari Chakryan to apply her theoretical insights in practice and pass this knowledge on to the department's students.
